I took some photos of the red fox I mentioned a few days ago in this blog. This particularly beasty is a Vulpes Vulpes Fulvus.

Red Fox on the Move

I saw one of them but someone else told me there is actually a pair of them that go around together and such. I went out behind the barn looking for someone and I saw this little guy or gal rolling around in the gravel and occasionally jumping up at the birds which were trying to scare them away from the area. They kept swooping down over it’s head and it kept jumping.  I snuck back to my truck and grabbed the camera.

Sorry that some of the pics are a bit blurry, I was zoomed in fairly well and didn’t have any kind of a tripod to use. As you can see from on of the photos it saw me, but it didn’t take particularly much interest and just went on about doing its thing.  The red fox then tromped down the rock embankment and hung out in the lower area for a bit as well before wandering off.

It’s a pretty red fox, I hope I can get some photos of them as a pair as well.  It’s probably a great area for foxes since there are so many squirrels, birds, waterfowl, turtles and other things to keep them well fed and play with.

I need to add this, it’s funny the response that most people have when they see the pics, they’re all worried that they’re rabid, or that they’re going to attack or something else.  This kind of misunderstanding I guess has been around a long time such things as story books and movies leading to the fox being portrayed as evil or slinking around. They do slink, they are a predator, for small prey.  Yes, if you own small animals I can understand your concerns, and you should certainly be the guardian of your animals and take proper precautions!  If you built your house in or ON a wilderness area, surprise, there’s wildlife! For the normal populace they’re rarely a threat, quit treating them like they are one and enjoy the diversity of nature that you may be fortunate enough to see in your backyard.

It reminds me of the city folk who move to the beautiful farming countryside, then complain that it smells like cow turds in the summer when the winds are just so. Or the people who move next to an airport and then complain about the noise (understandable though, if the airport moves near you!).

I’m so tired of every time a wild animal wanders by people immediately wonder if it’s rabid, or has evil plans or some such.  Get the heck out of your house once in a while, go for walks in the woods, see the wildlife and learn about it some.
